What Do I See?

Hermann Rorschach, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons

I think I only see a smudge

Or aliens guzzling down fudge,

Seahorses kissing sea urchins

or seaweed undersea lurking,

Eiffel Tower by Picasso,

An odd man with green mustachios,

Strange one-clawed acrobatic crabs

With ostentatious derby hats,

What malady’s inflicting me?

Imagination’s all I see.

This is for dVerse’s Monday quadrille challenge. By their definition, a quadrille is a poem with exactly 44 words. Our poems had to include the word “smudge.”

    1. Interesting thought. I think I did have to take an inkblot test as a kid. I didn’t like the idea of being analyzed, thinking they were looking for something wrong. One thing they did conclude was that I was imaginative.

      1. I don’t think anyone likes the idea of being analyzed, especially when notes are being taken and put into a record. You probably already knew what they concluded! 🙂

  1. p.s. I see a man in a white suit with a blue belt and a red coat, holding fireworks, while squirrels with flaming tails stand on sweet potatoes and push on him.

    1. Ha ha. I love it. 🙂 I’m reading your comment without seeing the image right now. I’ll have to look at both together.

  2. Oh yes – I think seeing all these things is a testament to a wild imagination! I love ‘aliens guzzling down fudge’ – I can definitely see that too 🙂

    1. Thank you. 🙂 I appreciate that. I had the concept before I found the actual inkblot to base the poem on.

    1. I don’t remember mine too well. (I was a kid.) Looking at inkblot images since then, I usually just find interesting things, not necessarily frightening or disturbing things. Of course, bat shapes seem to be easy to find, and I’m not necessarily a fan of bats. 😛 🙂

  3. Movement in a still frame is something worth noting in an inkblot test. I never administered them, but they’ve always been fascinating. Nicely done (I’m sure it’s all just imagination).
