The Dreamers, #Poem

Artwork by Lisa Finch

Here, we drift, floating quietly,

Along a dreamy, silver sea,

All my six furry friends and me.

Max, he dreams of his buried bones,

Rupert dreams of the hearth at home,

Chance dreams of bacon of his own.

George dreams of Frisbees in the air,

Winston dreams of old boots, a pair,

Rex dreams of an old comfy chair,

And we slip adrift on a pillowed cloud,

With only pleasant dreams allowed,

All seven of us — a small crowd.

Into a book’s pages I fell,

Dreaming of the stories I’ll tell,

My pen dipped into my inkwell,

And we fly along an azure sky,

‘Til our siesta passes by,

Me and six furry friends of mine.

I’m sharing this with dVerse’s Open Link Night. I was looking through my picture files for poetry inspiration and found this copy of artwork by Lisa Finch. I just love it for several reasons. Many of you know that I have an animal care business, so that was one reason. I love the glamour of the female character here, the fact that she has fallen asleep with an open book and the title of the artwork which is also “The Dreamers,” which seemed to speak of imagination and creativity.

Lisa Finch has an Etsy shop where she sells some of her work on canvas and also prints and note cards. I perused it and found so many more pieces that I enjoy. Animals seem to be a common theme, not just pets but wild and exotic animals as well. Many of her pieces seem to have a sort of female Dr. Doolittle character. She has some fantasy and almost surrealistic scenes with some old Hollywood glamour combined in there. I almost feel I should revisit for an art-themed post.

  1. You took me down the memory lane, Susan.
The rhythm of the poem lulled me towards a peaceful spot. How much understanding between the girl and her six dogs.

Lisa’s painting is beautiful. Although I don’t understand how the picnic basket is still full? 🙂

    Thank you.

    1. Thank you very much. 🙂 I was looking over your page and books, Pat, and it looks like you are also a dog lover and that we may have a few other things in common. That is a good question how that picnic basket is still full. You’d think the doggies would eat it if the girl didn’t. Maybe, they are too sleepy?

      1. My pleasure, Susan. Indeed we do! I noticed your love for dogs too 🙂 and your poems.

I like to imagine the six dogs so well behaved, that they won’t touch the basket’s content without their mommy’s permission. 🙂

  2. Delightful art and poem. I like to watch my cat dreaming.
We were taking care of daughter’s pets last week, and I felt a bit like the woman in the photo with her two big dogs and cat all lying around me while I read a book. 😀

    1. Thank you, Merril. 🙂 How nice. I’m imagining the scene with your daughter’s pets. 🙂 I was thinking that dogs and cats really do dream. Dogs will whimper or move their feet in their sleep, and you can tell that they are dreaming.

      1. Oh, definitely! We had a dog who barked in her sleep a few times. 😀 And my cat’s face twitches, his paws move–sometimes it seems like a good dream and sometimes a nightmare.

      2. Yes. I try to wake animals if I suspect a nightmare or, at least, try to soothe them.

  3. So lovely: only happy doggy daydreams allowed! ‘Chance dreams of bacon of his own.’ made me laugh: sometimes it’s the simple things 🙂

    1. It seemed like something a dog might dream about. Ha ha. 🙂 Thank you, Ingrid. <3

  4. This is gorgeously, gorgeously encapsulated. 💝💝 I love; “My pen dipped into my inkwell, and we fly along an azure sky.” 🙂
